Tusker FC’s reserve shot-stopper Edwin Simiyu is eager to make his maiden Kenya Premier League debut with the Ruaraka-based outfit.
The 22-year-old reckons training with first-choice goalie Joseph Ochuka has equipped him with the necessary experience for the top job.
Rising through the youth ranks, Simiyu earned his senior call-up last season, and training alongside the club’s top goalkeepers has sharpened his resolve.
“The senior keepers push me every day. Their encouragement gives me that extra drive to fight for the number one jersey. I learn so much from them,” he said.
“I’m putting in the work because I know my time will come. You always have to be ready—you never know when that chance might arrive.”
Simiyu’s confidence took a boost after his appearance in a pre-season friendly against Uganda’s Lugazi, where he featured in a 1-1 draw.
“Coming on in the second half was a huge moment. It was an international game and stepping onto that stage was motivational for me,” he added.
However, the young shot-stopper is under no illusions about the challenge ahead.
The step up from youth football has been a steep learning curve.
“It’s a different ball game at this level. The competition is fierce and the standards are higher. My time on the senior side has been both challenging and an eye-opener,” Simiyu admitted.
His journey with Tusker began in 2019, spurred by a social media post calling for youth trials. At the time, he didn’t even own a pair of gloves.
“I had to borrow gloves from teammates just to get by,” he recalled.
“But with perseverance, I made the cut.”
“I used to borrow the gloves from my fellow teammates. It was hard at first but through perseverance and determination I was able to make the cut,” he added.
He credits former Tusker number one, Emery Mvuyekure, for playing a pivotal role during his early days.
“Emery saw my struggle and gave me his gloves. We would take turns – he’d play, then I’d play. It made a big difference,” Simiyu said.
"Family is his biggest motivator, especially being the eldest, with responsibilities resting on his shoulders. Being the firstborn, I know my family looks up to me. Their support keeps me going,” he noted.
As he waits for his opportunity, Simiyu has set himself a target—five clean sheets this season.
“It’s an ambitious goal, but with
determination and hard work, I believe I can achieve it,” he declared.
