The Sakaja Super Cup, now in its second edition, has entered the quarterfinal stage, heightening excitement among football enthusiasts across Nairobi County.
Teams across the City are competing to walk away with Sh3 million set for the winners.
On Monday, Governor Sakaja Johnson distributed uniforms to the 136 teams that have qualified for this crucial phase of the tournament.
Speaking at the event in Nairobi, Governor Sakaja expressed his satisfaction with the level of competition displayed so far.
"I am happy that we are now in this quarterfinal phase. We have issued these uniforms to motivate the teams as they prepare for the upcoming matches,” he said.
The tournament, which began with over 780 teams from Nairobi estates, has served as a platform for young players from across the county to showcase their talent.
The final is set for December 14 at the Dandora Stadium, where the winning team will walk away with Sh3 million, second and third place Sh2 million and Sh1 million respectively.
Sub-county winning teams will also receive Sh100,000 each.
Governor Sakaja also announced plans to construct a home ground for the inaugural Sakaja Super Cup champions, Githurai All Stars, as part of his administration’s commitment to promoting grassroots sports.
"We have put measures in place to ensure it is catered for. We encourage all teams to give their best as there is a significant reward ahead,” he said.
"This tournament has offered our youth a chance to focus on productive endeavours, reducing crime in our neighbourhoods. As we approach the quarter-finals, we urge the teams to raise their game."
As the Sakaja Super Cup progresses, teams are gearing up for fierce competition, fueled by dreams of lifting the prestigious title and winning the lucrative rewards.
The tournament is organised under the auspices of the Sakaja Foundation in partnership with the Football Kenya Federation (KFK) and Nairobi County.
Sakaja Cup was launched last year with Githurail All-Stars, from Roysambu sub county walking away with the grand prize of Sh3 million.
“The money we won has really supported us, each player got something some started businesses like a car wash, and selling clothes. We even have some who went back to school,” said Githurai All-Stars Assistant Coach, Evans Odenyo.
“We are working hard to defend the title and are confident we will bring it back home this December.”
