Gor Mahia stand-in coach Zedekiah Otieno is optimistic ahead of his side’s upcoming match against Mara Sugar on Saturday.
Otieno believes his players can build on Wednesday’s emphatic 2-0 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz and secure the maximum points from the eagerly-anticipated clash.
Otieno took over as stand-in coach after Brazilian Leonardo Neiva was sent packing a fortnight ago.
Despite his temporary role, he is determined to ensure Gor Mahia remain competitive in the league.
He said the recent victory over Kakamega Homeboyz, a hard-fought battle won with grit and resilience, has fueled the team’s spirit.
“It’s a testament to our unwavering belief in ourselves, a belief that we are determined to nurture and strengthen,” he said.
He said the hunger for victory will be their weapon against Mara Sugar at Awendo Green stadium at the weekend.
“The upcoming match is a chance for Gor Mahia to solidify their position, to prove their mettle, to show the world that the Green Army is a force to be reckoned with,” Otieno said.
“The victory over Kakamega Homeboyz gave us a boost of confidence going into the upcoming fixture after a string of unimpressive outcomes. The players showcased their tactical discipline and defensive solidity, and we hope to carry this to our next match.”
Otieno emphasised the importance of maintaining the same level of discipline against Mara Sugar.
“I believe a solid defensive unit and a clinical attack will be the key to securing a positive result.”
The tactician has urged his players to focus on their performances and collectively strive for success.
“Every player in the squad has a crucial role to play in our quest for silverware."
He believes their never-give-up attitude will be crucial against Mara Sugar.
“The fighting spirit and determination saw us overcome adversity and also gave us positive results,” he said.
Gor Mahia are currently eighth on the Kenyan Premier League standings with 12 points from seven matches.
A victory over Mara Sugar would see them move closer to the top five and maintain their push for the title.
He highly anticipates that the record Kenyan champions will continue their upward trajectory and
challenge for silverware in the final
stretch of the season.
