Kenya Under-20 rugby coach Simon Jawichre wants his side to be clinical in attack and work on the setpieces ahead of their final pool match against the USA in the World Under-20 Rugby trophy in Scotland on Friday.
The team, also known as Chipu, were blown away 51-3 by the Netherlands in their second pool match as their hopes of advancing to the knockout phase went up in smoke.
Kenya trailed 41-3 at half-time before marginally improving in the second half by conceding two tries.
Kenya's defence was porous, conceding eight tries while their attack was blunt and registered only a penalty with only three visits to the Dutch 22.
Jawichre said with two training days remaining, they have a lot of ground to cover if they are to be competitive against the North Americans.
"If we are to get our attack going and avoid ball handling errors, which are basic, we need to work on our accuracy. From the statistics, we only had two line breaks which is not good. However, I believe the boys can play better and score some tries,” noted Jawichre.
The Catholic University Monks coach said another area of concern will be the lineout which malfunctioned with a 22 per cent success rate.
"We only won three out of nine throws with the winners pilfering six throws in the one-sided duel. The lineout is a technical facet of the game and involves three components —the thrower, the lifter and the jumper. During the match, it was not working ”
Jawichre said he is confident he will see an improved display of his charges in the final pool match.
“We have done our review of what went wrong and I expect a response from the team,” noted Jawichre.
Chipu lost their opening match to Uruguay 25-7 a week ago and captain Andy Cole Omolo thinks there is a lot to play for.
“The boys will not go down without a fight and we will fight till the end. I believe we can do much better in the remaining match. ”
