Friends School Bwake and St Joseph’s Kitale are the national boys and girls rugby 7s champions.
Bwake needed a sudden death try from Darias Kipsang to beat Vihiga Boys 19-14 to list their maiden national final during the final at Kisii School on Wednesday evening.
During the normal time, Gerom Lumumba scored two tries which were converted by Mabongo Chesoli while Wilson Tonga's two tries for Vihiga were converted by Felix Apuoka.
Bwake coach Cleophas Mikisi said: “We lost to Vihiga 17-0 but we went to the drawing board and worked on our mistakes. We learnt their game plan and that has helped us in the final.”
He added: “It was a tough final because Vihiga is a good team. For now, I will have to celebrate the win. It feels proud to be a national champion,” he added.
St Mary's School Yala finished third after a hard-fought 10- 5 win against Kisii School. Angelo Makori scored a sudden death try after the teams drew 5-5 at full-time.
Janpaulsen Otieno gave Kisii the lead before Albert Otieno equalised for Yala to send the game into sudden death.
Defending national and East Africa champions Koyonzo finished sixth after thrashing Nairobi School 56-5.
St Joseph's Kitale lifted the inaugural girls' 7s title after a 10-5 comeback win over Kinale. Rael Morara gave Kinale the lead after touching down for an unconverted try.
In the second half, Sinaida Naliaka pulled St Joseph's level with an unconverted try. Esther Wanyonyi scored the winning try for St Joseph's.
St Joseph's coach Godwin Alumada said: "It was a tough match. Kinale gave us a run for our money but our girls lived up to expectations."
Kinale's Allan Bush said luck was not on their side. "St Joseph's won the battle but we will take the war to them in Uganda during the East Africa championship. I introduced the game at the school in November and I’m happy with the progress of the girls," said Bush.
St Theresa's Kithimu beat Kisii County's little-known Nyagecheche 12-5 in the third-place play-off.
Nyagichenche coach Dennis Onyango said despite the loss, he was proud of the girls. “The girls gave their all and I hope we will qualify for East Africa,” said the coach.
