Services at a church in Githurai 44 were on Sunday halted for hours after the body of a night guard was found in one of the rooms.
The body of Emanuel Wangatia, 36, was found in a church sentry long after he had been killed by unknown people.
A window to the main church had been broken to enable the attackers to access the premises.
Police who visited the scene said they were called to the Fountain Life Church by one of the pastors and informed the body of the guard was lying in a pool of blood in the room.
Preliminary findings showed Wangatia was hacked by the attackers and had multiple injuries.
Police suspect he resisted a planned robbery of the church prompting the brutal murder.
It is not clear what was stolen from the church.
The body was moved to the mortuary as police said they were looking for the gang behind the murder.
Another body of a night guard was found on the riverbank in Tassia, Nairobi.
Police suspect Moses Bahati was dragged to the scene where the body was found.
The motive of the murder is yet to be known and preliminary findings show the body had multiple stab wounds.

In Kasarani, the body of an unknown man was found at the railway line.
The body seemed to have been dumped there after murder elsewhere.
Witnesses and police said blood was oozing from the victim’s mouth, eyes and nose at the moment it was found.
The body was moved to the mortuary ahead of the planned autopsy and identification.
Police said investigations had been launched to establish the motives and those behind them.
Cases of sudden deaths have also been on the rise in the city and investigations are pending.
