Leaders in Mt Kenya region have ganged up against retired President Uhuru Kenyatta calling on him to quit active politics.
The calls came a day after Uhuru called for Jubilee Party Special National Delegates Conference indicating that he has not retired from politics.
The leaders accuse the former head of state of stooping too low despite having occupied a high position of the country's Commander- in-Chief.
Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara said Uhuru had sunk his value to the lowest especially since he went to the Jubilee party headquarters to quell a clash between East African Legislative Assembly MP Kanini Kega and secretary general Jeremiah Kioni.
“Uhuru Kenyatta, even if you were given the Jubilee Party, what would you do with it? Instead of leaving the party to the young politicians, you are now running around with goons to destroy their meetings,” Kihara said.
The politicians spoke at Thika Stadium in Kiambu county on Sunday where they attended the 25th music anniversary for popular Kikuyu gospel artist Muigai Wa Njoroge.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was present.
Kihara asked Gachagua to stop responding to the former head of state but instead leave the task to them.
“From today, we urge you to stop responding to Uhuru. Leave him to us because he has devalued himself to our level. Leave him to us so that we ask him why he gave the instruments of power to Ruto yet he continues to say that his leader is Raila Odinga (opposition leader),” Kihara said.
Investments, Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria said they had agreed with Gachagua to convene a meeting at Uhuru's Ichaweri village home in Gatundu South to further their calls on him to stop politicking.
Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe wondered why Uhuru wants to remain politically relevant and sought repentance on behalf of his Gatundu South constituents.
Majority leader in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung’wa said while they respected Uhuru, he had failed to respect himself and as such, it will be hard to continue according him the esteem he deserves.
The former president last week quelled a row between Kega and Kioni after a group led by the former Kieni legislator was reportedly spotted throwing rocks and other objects into the Jubilee Party headquarters building in Kileleshwa after being allegedly refused entry.
Kega was accompanied by Nominated MP Sabina Chege and Eldas MP Adan Keynan, among others.
Kega and Kioni have been embroiled in a war over control of the party with the latter refusing to step down as the party’s secretary general to give way for Kega who was handed the position after the party’s national executive council made changes on February 9, 2023.
The changes to accord Kega the position was later approved by the Registrar of Political Parties but the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal later overturned them.
