Two perish in Kirinyaga septic tank accident

Two people lost their lives Friday afternoon after a septic tank they were digging at the Kirinyaga county government offices in Kutus caved in.

The county’s CEC for Roads, Transport and Public Works Jared Migwi said the two had been hired to dig the septic tank by the contracting company undertaking the project.

The project dubbed Kenya Town Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Project is funded by the National Government through the Ministry of Water.

It has been connecting the sewer to the county headquarters among other government institutions in the county.

He said four people were digging the hole when it caved in. However, he said, two were saved while two others lost their lives.

“The accident happened Friday afternoon where some people were buried by some loose soil. We tried to respond swiftly. We managed to save two people but unfortunately, we have lost two others,” he told the media.

However, residents led by Irene Wanjiku complained that the rescue team delayed and arrived way after the accident occurred.

John Chomba, another resident, said maybe their lives would have been saved if the rescue team had arrived a bit earlier.

Migwi insisted that they acted swiftly and used county machinery to retrieve the two bodies.
