A man has died following a tragic road accident along Nairobi – Mombasa highway in Machakos county.
Athi River subcounty police commander Jos Mudavadi said the man died on the spot in the incident that occurred in Kapiti plains area on Tuesday.
Mudavadi said the incident involved a Nissan pickup and a trailer.
The pickup was moving from Mombasa heading towards Nairobi while the trailer was moving towards the opposite direction when they got involved in a head on collision.
The incident was reported at Kyumbi police station as a fatal road traffic accident report.
Police identified the diseased as Vincent Nzyoki Muia, 45.
“It happened that one unknown driver was driving a motor vehicle, Nissan pick – up from Mombasa general direction heading towards Nairobi general direction," Mudavadi said.
"Upon reaching the scene of the accident, he failed to keep his traffic lane and collided head on with an oncoming Mercedes Benz Actros from Nairobi."
Mudavadi said Muia who was a passenger in the pick-up sustained serious head and chest injuries and died on the spot.
“The pick-up driver also sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Machakos Level 5 hospital while unconscious. The trailer driver sustained a fracture of the collar bone and was rushed to the same hospital for treatment,” the police boss said.
He said the deceased’s body was moved to Machakos Level 5 hospital mortuary awaiting an autopsy.
The wreckages were towed to Kyumbi police station pending inspection.
Mudavadi said they had launched investigations into the accident.
