Police in Kangundo, Machakos County are investigating an incident where a woman and her daughter died in a tragic road accident on Thursday night.

The two according to police sources died on the spot following the accident that involved a motorcycle and a lorry along the Kangundo – Mwala road in the Itoloni area in the Kangundo subcounty.

There were pillion passengers on the same bodaboda involved in the accident during the accident.

The matter was reported to Kangundo police station as a fatal road traffic accident incident report hours after it occurred.

The duo died after the motorcycle they were riding on was hit by a lorry which was transporting sand during the incident.

The woman and daughter were en route to Kangundo High School where they reside. The woman’s husband is a teacher working in the same school.

They were travelling together during the accident.

The husband was, however, using a separate bodaboda that was behind the deceased’s persons and hence didn’t get involved in the accident.

Officers from Kangundo police station responded to the scene, processed it and removed the bodies to Patjud Funeral Home, a private mortuary in Matungulu subcounty.

The motor vehicle was impounded at the same police station awaiting inspection among other necessary police actions after its driver fled the scene for fear of attack by irate members of the public who unsuccessfully attempted to torch it.

Police intervened by repulsing the group and saving the lorry.

Alexander Kilonzo, a bodaboda rider, expressed anger over the incident claiming that most road users don't respect them.

Kilonzo also blamed the accident on local leaders arguing that they had failed the electorate by ignoring Machakos roads most of which were in poor state without repairs being done on them by relevant authorities.

“We have had lots of such accidents on our roads, but leaders have given us deaf ears, no action,” another bodaboda operator Dennis Zakayo said.

Zakayo termed the fatal accident as terrifying ‘since the husband helplessly watched his wife and daughter die’.

He called on road users to adhere to traffic rules and urged the government to see to it that lorries are restricted from night travels.

Lukhungu Matolo, another resident said it was sad to have lost a mother and her daughter and called on leaders to ensure that the road was repaired.

Kangundo High School teacher Carlmax Ombasa said it was sad for his colleague to lose his wife and daughter to the accident.

He called on leaders to repair the road.
