Members of the public mill around the scene where a man was found dead inside his relative's house at Kwamumbu village in Mwala, Machakos county on June 22, 2026.
Police in Mwala, Machakos County, are investigating yet another mysterious death after the body of a 52-year-old man was found hanging from roof rafters inside a relative’s house in Kwamumbu village.
Officers said the man was discovered dead on Monday with a rope around his neck, deepening concerns over a string of unexplained deaths reported in different parts of Machakos in recent days.
Police were alerted by a local administrator before officers rushed to the scene. Scenes of Crime personnel documented the area and processed evidence before the body was removed to the Machakos Level 5 Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem.
Residents gathered at the scene, watching as officers carried out the removal of the body in what has become a familiar and troubling sight for the community. The cause of death has not yet been established. Detectives attached to Mwala Police Station under the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have launched inquiries into the incident.
The latest case comes barely a day after another body was discovered dumped in a stream along the Machakos–Mombasa Road on Sunday.
The body was found by a passerby who reported the matter to Machakos Police Station. Officers responded and took the remains to Machakos Level 5 Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy. Investigations are ongoing.
In a separate incident on June 17, the body of a Machakos County Government employee, identified as Alphonse Mbune Matee, was found dumped along the Machakos–Mombasa Road in Kyumbi, Athi River sub-county. Police said nine suspects have since been arrested in connection with his killing and are being held at Kyumbi Police Station. Investigators have applied to the Mavoko Law Courts seeking to detain the suspects for a further 14 days as probes continue. The court is expected to rule on the application on Thursday. The recent incidents add to growing concern in the county after four other bodies were discovered dumped in forests in Kathiani and Matungulu sub-counties. Police said the victims may have been killed elsewhere before their bodies were dumped. Kathiani Sub-county Police Commander George Kashmir said one suspect has been arrested in connection with the forest discoveries and is assisting detectives with investigations. All the bodies recovered in the recent incidents have been taken to Machakos Level 5 Hospital and Kangundo Level 4 Hospital mortuaries for postmorterm and identification as police continue to piece together what appears to be a widening trail of violent deaths in the region.
