State agencies significantly reduced their pending bills over the nine months to March 2026, cutting outstanding obligations and associated penalties by Sh31.37 billion, according to the Controller of Budget.
The report highlights efforts by government entities to clear long-standing debts owed to suppliers and contractors, easing pressure on public finances.
The biggest reduction was recorded by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), whose pending bills fell from Sh50.6 billion in June 2025 to Sh28.5 billion in March 2026.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) also made notable progress, reducing its outstanding obligations from Sh72.5 billion to Sh57.6 billion during the same period.
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) cut its pending bills from Sh9.5 billion to Sh4.6 billion, while the National Olympic Committee of Kenya reduced its liabilities from Sh8.8 billion to Sh5.5 billion.
The Pyrethrum Processing Company maintained its pending bills at Sh3.5 billion.
Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o said the reductions reflect ongoing efforts by state agencies to improve financial management, settle accrued obligations, and minimise the cost of penalties associated with delayed payments.
