NAIROBI has named a road next to State House after Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete.

The Jakaya Kikwete Road was previously known as Milimani Road and is 0.49km.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero yesterday said the road was named after Kikwete because of his close relationship with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

"When the President said you will be visiting, we consulted to find out if we could formally rename this road and being good friends with him, he accepted and as you can see, it leads straight to his gate,” he said.

Kidero was speaking when he payed the governor a courtesy call at City Hall.

Kidero said it is an honour to be the last city to host Kikwete before he retires.

Kidero said the friendship between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Kikwete had largely contributed to economic growth trade partnerships between the two countries.

He said Nairobi will continue to support and welcome investors from Tanzania to strengthen ties.

Kikwete said:

“I will always remember this gesture of partnership and cooperation you have shown me. This such an amazing time to have left my home country to share my last moments in leadership with such great people in a great city.”

He said he will encourage investors invest in Kenya.

"During the the time I have been the Head of State of the Republic of Tanzania with my friend Uhuru, we have experienced a 40 per cent trade growth between the two countries and as a matter of fact 90 per cent of East African Community trade happens between the two countries, Kikwete said.
