Woman dies following domestic fight in Kitale

Detectives launched manhunt for an assailant in the murder of a woman following a domestic fight in Kitale town.

Police said Faith Mukhwana succumbed to stab wounds at a hospital in the town after the attack at her home.

She died on April 7 in the ICU where she had been admitted following the stabbing, police said.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations, detectives handling the matter said.

The motive of the attack was not immediately established, but police said they were following good leads to help in the arrest of the assailant.

In Oyugis, Homa Bay, a 63-year-old man was found dead in an open field near his home.

Police were called to the scene and collected the body of John Caleb to the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations following the April 7 incident.

Autopsy reveals MMU student died of strangulation

An autopsy conducted on slain Multimedia University student Sylvia Kemunto revealed that she died of strangulation.

The report released on Wednesday stated that she also sustained head injuries caused by a blunt object.

Chief government pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor and family pathologist Dr Martha Mwangi noted that Kemunto had defensive wounds, indicating she tried to fight off her attacker.

“We observed neck injuries typical of strangulation, suggesting she was deprived of oxygen before death. Based on these findings, we concluded that the cause of death was strangulation,” said Oduor.

The autopsy indicated that the body was decomposed when it was found on April 2 in a water tank at the university hostel.

The postmortem was conducted at Montezuma Funeral Home in Nairobi on April 8, in the presence of investigating officers and family members.

Philip Eric Mutinda, a 19-year-old Multimedia University student suspected of killing the first-year student and dumping her body in a rooftop water tank, will remain in custody for 21 days as investigations continue.

The suspect allegedly told police he had tried to reconcile with Kemunto but claimed she provoked him, leading to a violent altercation.

It is alleged that he pushed her against a wall and bed, then strangled her with a hoodie drawstring. The blow caused her head injuries.

Mutinda then allegedly placed the body in a suitcase and moved it to his room. He covered it with a blanket, left for a walk, and returned about 40 minutes later.

Later that night, he reportedly placed the body back in the suitcase. Around 4am on March 31, he is said to have transferred it to the rooftop tank.

He allegedly removed Kemunto’s SIM card, discarded it within the university, and kept her phone.

He later visited a church and offered the phone as a donation.

Investigators have since recovered the device, marking a key breakthrough.

The suspect traveled home and later confessed to his family, who escorted him to Sultan Hamud police station, where he surrendered.

On April 7, Kibera Magistrate Zainab Abdul ordered that Mutinda be held at Capital Hill police station until April 28 to allow the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to complete inquiries.

Four suspected of belonging to vehicle theft syndicate arrested

Detectives launched a crackdown aimed at arresting the masterminds behind a syndicate where gangs behind a series of thefts of motor vehicles have been on the prowl.

This was done in response to cases of motor vehicle thefts in Nairobi and its surroundings, police said.

According to the police, four suspects were arrested in connection with the car theft syndicate.

Police claimed the four specialise in erasing and altering chassis numbers of stolen vehicles, panel beating, riveting and producing fake number plates, as well as prefabrication and identity change on the mirrors.

Additionally, they were involved in hiring vehicles using fraudulent identification, only to steal them thereafter.

On March 3, 2025, detectives nabbed one of the suspects in the city and recovered a stolen vehicle.

Further investigative interviews with the suspect paved way for the arrest of three other suspects.

Sudden death incidents

On Monday, police officers got reports that Yusuf Otaro, 27, had left home for the Isecha trading centre but never returned.

Upon investigations, they established that the man was found by neighbours lying unconscious by the road.

He was rushed to Isecha level four hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

It was confirmed that the deceased had a history of diabetes.

The body was moved to Christamarian hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.

On Wednesday, the body of a 47-year-old man was found in his rented house.

Officers were called to the scene where they found the man lying lifeless on his back and vomit found on a basin beside the bed.

The body was moved to City morgue pending postmortem.
