Environment CS Aden Duale on Saturday came to the defence of NIS director general Noordin Haji and DCI director Mohamed Amin against what he termed targeted attacks from leaders.

He did not name names but it comes in the wake of allegations by Public Service CS Justin Muturi that the NIS is behind the wave of abductions in the country.

Speaking during a graduation ceremony in Almustaqabal University, Garissa county, Duale said it is wrong for any leader to stand up and aim attacks at leaders who head critical sectors like the security.

“So we want to ask some leaders to stop profiling public servants and more so those in the security sector who come from Northeastern,” Duale said.

“There are many Kenyans who were DGs of the NIS when I was in politics. There was General Kameru, General Gichangi, General Boinnet, and when they headed this critical institution you didn’t speak. “Why is that you are now speaking when a Kenyan from Northeastern has been appointed to head that institution?”

The former Garissa Township MP revisited the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying that he had shown a high level of incompetence and tribalism.

“I am speaking as a person who sat with him in the Cabinet. Every day he had an agenda of advancing tribalism. It is plain clear that he refused to work with the President because the President refused to tolerate his tribalism, which he was hell-bent on advancing,” he said.

Duale said tribalism will not be tolerated under President William Ruto’s administration as the head of state is determined to unite the country as well as religions and tribes.

Garissa Township MP Dekow Mohamed hit out at Muturi, accusing him of not being consistent in matters abduction.

“CS Muturi did not utter a word when our sons and daughters were being abducted every other day, but when came out loudly to express his displeasure when his son was finally arrested. That is hypocrisy,” he said.

Two weeks ago, the CS recorded a statement about his son’s alleged abduction, linking the incident to the spy chief.

He told the police that he got help from President William Ruto, who called the NIS director general before his son was released.

The CS’s statement to the CID has received condemnation and praise in equal measures from leaders and Kenyans at large.

At the height of demonstrations by Gen Z in June last year, former DP Rigathi Gachagua demanded that the NIS boss steps down from his position to pave the way for a more competent director general.

“Haji must take responsibility for the deaths that occurred and for the mayhem and for failing Ruto, the government,” Gachagua said at the time.

“He must take responsibility for failing the people, for not doing his job and advising correctly. He must do the honourable thing by not only taking responsibility but resigning from that office and allowing the President to pick a competent DG,” the former DP added.
