Representatives of teachers in Nyamira county have raised concerns over leadership crisis in schools due to the delayed replacement of retired school heads.

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers and Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association leaders in Nyamira have blamed the Teachers Service Commission for what they termed as a deliberate intention to paralyse the institutions.

Kessha chairman Job Oira, Nyamira Kuppet executive secretary Lewis Nyakweba and assistant chairman Festus Segera accused the TSC of dragging its feet in replacing the retired principals.

“It’s appalling that the teacher's employer has left the responsibility of managing schools to deputies who have been serving in acting capacity for far too long. Why do we have such a scenario when we know how sensitive school management roles are?” Oira asked.

“It is also unfortunate the majority of the deputies who are in acting capacity don't meet the qualifications of being principals."

Segera decried the high number of teachers who have stagnated in the same job groups for years.

“Our teachers have not been promoted for the last five years, a factor which has killed their morale in teaching. We are appealing to the TSC to promote them as stipulated in law,” Segera said.

Nyanza region director of Education Nelson Sifuna, however, said the government is in the process of replacing the retired teachers was on and there should be no cause of alarm.
