Shock and grief hit a family in the West Alego location when a man hacked his wife to death at Kolal Nyasita village, attracting rage from his in-laws who retaliated by burning two houses in their homestead.

According to villagers, the incident occurred shortly after 8.00 am when Alloyce Ochieng attacked his wife, Laurine Ochieng with whom they had separated but had come to pick up her daughter.

A villager, David Otieno said that Laurine had arrived in the company of her sister and a boda boda operator and after a short exchange of greetings; her husband requested that they go to his mother’s house to iron out their differences.

“He asked his mother to excuse them so that they could sort out a few issues,” said Otieno adding that immediately the mother left, he locked the house from inside.

Otieno said that villagers were attracted by wails and screams from the lady and their attempts to save the victim were hampered by lack of access.

He said that members of the public and Alloyce’s mother watched helplessly as he hacked the victim and ignored pleas to stop the act.

“When he realized that he had killed her, he opened the door and took off to an unknown destination,” said Otieno.

The local administration and the police were informed and they came to collect the body which was transferred to Siaya County Referral Hospital.

Shortly afterwards, relatives of the deceased arrived and set ablaze the assailant’s house and that of his mother before taking off.

The villagers called for peace within families, adding that dialogue must be given a chance in case of any misunderstanding.

Siaya Subcounty Police Commander, Everline Cherotich confirmed the incident, saying that police have launched a manhunt for the suspected murderer.
