Police in Oyugis are investigating an incident in which one person got injured following fracas between two groups of youths at a burial in Kasipul constituency.
The fight that broke out at Kabuor village in East Kamagak Ward also saw some cars getting smashed after being pelted with stones.
Rachuonyo South Police Commander Philemon Saera said youths who clashed are alleged supporters of some politicians.
According to Saera, some two politicians were reportedly accompanied by goons who were at the centre of the clash.
Some mourners said the fight began after a group of youths who accompanied one of the politicians tried to eject their opponent from his seat.
This made the other group angry as they tried to push back to defend themselves. He said both the politicians are safe.
“The police have the information, and investigations are underway. The completion of investigations will enable us to decide on the best action to take,” Saera said.
The police officer said the act is worrying as he called on politicians to restrain their supporters.
He asked leaders to focus on serving the people as their mandate, which is the development of the areas they represent.
“Let youths know that politicians may use them to cause violence, but they are the casualties. We’ll also not hesitate from arresting those who perpetrate chaos,” the police officer said.
Kasipil opinion leaders led by Newton Ogada said it is high time political parties took action against their members linked to violence.
He said the trend in which people fight in funerals is worrying and alarming.
He also called on the police to take action against whoever is responsible for the violence and punish them as a lesson to the rest of the groups that have similar intentions.
“We’re urging the police to expedite investigations and arraign the violence promoters. Political parties should move with speed and take action against rogue members,” Ogada said.
