Two men lost their lives in a tragic road accident involving a motorcycle and a truck along the Rongo-Homa Bay road near Arujo Bridge.
The victims were reportedly en route to participate in the ongoing ODM grassroots elections at Kabunde Social Hall yesterday when the incident occurred.
According to reports, the motorcycle that was ferrying two passengers to Kabunde was struck head-on by a goods truck attempting to overtake another motorcycle.
One of the men died on the spot, while the second, who sustained multiple fractures, was rushed to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital but later succumbed to injuries during surgery.
Homa Bay Sub-County Police Commander Emanuel Kiplagat confirmed the incident, stating that the truck, owned by a courier company and heading to Homa Bay Town, veered into the motorcycle’s lane while overtaking, leading to the fatal collision.
He urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic rules, adding, “Some reckless drivers tend to justify their actions after an accident. This tragedy could have been avoided if the truck driver had exercised proper care.”
Kiplagat said the driver of the truck and his passengers sustained minor soft tissues injuries.
However, he warned members of the public against interfering with the work of police, citing that the area locals were set on burning the Fargo truck but were prevented by the police, who arrived at the scene of the accident in the nick of time.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Referral Hospital Dr Vincent Oduor, confirmed that one of the ODM supporters had multiple fractures and died in during surgery in the theater.
He confirmed that the third victim was stabilized by the doctor and is recuperating at the hospital.
The truck has since been towed to the Homa Bay Town Police Station for further inspection.
