The newly constructed Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay will officially be handed over on May 15, marking a major milestone in preparations for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations set to take place in the lakeside county.

The announcement was made during an inspection tour led by Internal Security Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, who was joined by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.

“On our last visit, only the main stand was visible. Today, we have a 10,000-seater stand nearly complete,” said Dr. Omollo.

“What’s left is the canopy and some finishing on adjacent amenities, which will be done within one to two weeks.”

Dr. Omollo confirmed that the contractor has assured the stadium will be ready for handover by mid-May.

The team also assessed the Homa Bay Airstrip, which is undergoing upgrades in time for the national event.

While the terminal building will still be under construction, Dr. Omollo confirmed that the runway extension and apron will be ready by May 17.

“It may not be complete, but it will be fully functional to support logistical needs for the celebrations,” he said.

Upgrades on key roads are also well underway, with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA), Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), and Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) all involved.

Dr. Omollo praised the pace of progress, saying improved infrastructure will ease movement during the festivities.

With this year’s Madaraka Day theme focusing on the blue economy, the delegation also visited the Homa Bay Pier and nearby waterfront developments.

These locations will be central to the celebrations, showcasing the region’s maritime potential.

Another key project nearing completion is the construction of a mini State Lodge, which is 85 per cent done.

The facility will host President William Ruto during his stay and will serve as the venue for an official luncheon with dignitaries and local leaders.

Dr. Omollo thanked Homa Bay residents and businesses for their patience during the ongoing construction.

“We know the works have caused some disruption, but it’s all in service of a greater purpose. We urge the community to continue cooperating and get ready to welcome guests with ample accommodation, food, and hospitality,” he said.

Security and logistics preparations are also in motion, with the County Security and Intelligence Committee, led by County Commissioner Moses Lilan, participating in the inspection tour.

Also in attendance was the Governor of Nyeri, visiting in advance of the upcoming Devolution Conference scheduled to be hosted in the county this August.
