MILLERS and traders have increased maize prices in parts of Rift Valley to Sh2,600 per 90kg bag.
This is above the Sh2,300 at the National Cereals and Produce Board depot.
Mombasa Millers, Dola and Unga Millers are among those offering higher prices to farmers delivering their commodity.
A spot check yesterday revealed farmers are queuing with lorries to deliver maize to millers but at the NCPB depot in Eldoret town, there was no single lorry.
There are fears of a maize shortage in the next few months, which is leading to the increase in prices.
Consumers also fear the price of maize flour will go up in the next few weeks.
Board CEO Newton Terer says they have so far bought 387,000 bags of maize in 90kg bags at Sh2,300 per bag.
The board has so far paid farmers more than Sh888 million for the deliveries.
The NCPB is still holding more than Sh500 million to buy maize from farmers.
There are fears the board may not achieve its target to buy one million maize bags due to low delivery.
