Elgeyo Marakwet assembly speaker Sabulei resigns to join Interior ministry
He did not elaborate on the next role he is taking up at the ministry
Kibire, a close ally of CS Murkomen, was elected as the new Elgeyo Marakwet speaker
In Summary
Former MCA Lawi Kibire has officially taken charge as speaker of the Elgeyo Marakwet county assembly.
Kibire has replaced Philemon Sabulei, who resigned last month.
The University of Nairobi-trained land economist formerly served as MCA of Metkei in Keiyo South before vying for the speaker’s position.
He has taken up the job with vigor and has promised an open door style of leadership to strengthen the role of the assembly in legislation, oversight and representation.
Kibire, who is also a businessman and a close ally of Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, was first nominated MCA in 2017 and was elected MCA for Metkei in 2022.
“I have a vision for the assembly and the county in terms of service delivery and leadership,” he said. On representation, he said he will empower MCAs to be good representatives.
“I would like to see our assembly clearly play its role by ensuring prudent use of resources on intended projects. This will help residents get value for their taxes,” he said.
Kibire said he will consistently consult the executive to deal with emerging issues.
“Oversight does not mean wars with the executive but working together to ensure we all play our part for the benefit of the people,” he said.
“Consultation does not mean we must agree on everything, but it helps to bridge the gap so that our differences are reduced.”
The youthful speaker said he is keen on improving the Elgeyo Marakwet Equitable Development Act to ensure all residents benefit from devolution.
“I am driven by the desire to see equality and fairness for all. Poverty demeans people and I wouldn’t like to continue seeing people unable to access education or medication. My mantra is to fight for economic freedom of our people so they are able to drive their own lives,” he said.
Kibire said he has been championing for the empowerment of youth, women and persons living with disability and he is of the view that President William Ruto’s administration has done well in helping youth secure opportunities locally and abroad.
“Youth unemployment is a time bomb and we have to encourage our young people to take up self employment,” he said.
