Residents of Butula have warmly welcomed the announcement by President William Ruto of the planned construction of the Butula-Nambale-Amukura road.
The residents, who want the project implemented the soonest, said they felt their prayers of many decades have been answered as the road will play a crucial role in helping the residents of the three subcounties with great potential for economic gains.
“This road will be an answered prayer to both edible oil and sugar sector as it will help farmers explore their market potential with presence of two sugar factories in the county and an Export Processing Zone at Nasewa,” Bramuel Musungu, a resident of Malanga said.
The more than 35 kilometres stretch is expected to be completed by June 2026 which will be a sigh of relief to the residents.
While touring Busia County, the President made the declaration pointing out that the development would stimulate the economy in the area due to improved transport and trade activities.
In his address, President Ruto said the road would not only provide better access to markets for farmers and traders but also attract investors to the area.
“This road is a key pillar in our mission to spur development in Western Kenya. By connecting the various subcounties, it is going to improve access to essential services and create economic opportunities for the residents of Butula and Busia county at large,” the President said.
MP for Teso North, Mary Emase, who hosted the President at Alupe, echoed the sentiments of the President by highlighting the transformative socio-economic potential that comes with good infrastructure.
“Poor roads have caused us a lot of difficulties. We appreciate the government’s dedication to enhancing infrastructure in our area. We are not only honoured but also confident this project is going to transform our region,” she said.
The residents urged the government to speed up the construction and use local labour and materials as a means of job creation for the youth.
The Butula-Nambale-Amukura road will open up major economic centers in the county and will ensure inter-regional trade and improve the strength of Busia as a critical gateway to Uganda and the entire Eastern Africa region.
The citizens of Butula are optimistic the road will lead to positive changes in their lives and also grow the economy in the region after the President assured them the initiative for the undertaking will start soon.
