Relative calm has been restored following clashes at Kisumu's border with Kericho, deputy commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia has said, noting police acted quickly.

Lotiatia said district security committee teams from the two areas

moved with speed to end attacks by members of the Luo and Kalenjin communities following Thursday's presidential re-run.

He said

criminal gangs took advantage of perceived conflict and protests to infiltrate the region and rob motorists along the busy Kericho-Kisumu highway.

"Goons took advantage of the protests to descend on unsuspecting motorists whom they robbed at will," he said.

He addressed a public baraza of local leaders and youths along Muhoroni bridge on Friday.

Lotiatia

asked the communities to shelve political undertones and promote peace and unity.

Lotiatia asked "overzealous youths" to desist from barricading major highways saying infrastructure is key to economic growth.

The DCC further asked local leaders to dialogue to end perennial conflicts in the region.

His sentiments come after Governors Anyang' Nyong'o 9Kisumu), Stephen Sang (Nandi) and Paul Chepkwony (Kericho) met communities on Saturday to discusses ending border conflict.
