President William Ruto has announced that Kenya has increased her tea exports to Iran by eight times, in the first quarter of this year.
Speaking during Iran President Ebrahim Raisi's visit on Wednesday, Ruto said the country is a strong export partner to Kenya.
"I sought the President's commitment to exporting more tea, meat and other agricultural products to Iran, and through Iran to the Central Asian countries," he said.
"Trade volume between our countries has been on a steady upward trajectory. Kenya exported tea worth $28.4 million (Sh4 billion) to Tehran in the first quarter of this year, which is an eight-fold increase."
He said a stronger collaboration with Iran will help Kenya in delivering its produce to the larger Asian region.
Ruto said Kenya and Iran are also strategically situated to be key entry points for each other in their respective regions
"We have affirmed our joint commitment to capitalize on this advantage," Ruto said.
Kenya and Iran have historically had cooperation in development include, education, scholarships, infrastructure, health, water, fisheries, agriculture and housing, urban and metropolitan development among other sectors.
