Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa has vouched for the return of the office of the opposition leaders saying it is of great importance.
Barasa said the office will oversee the government activities and keep it in check.
This, he said, will ensure the government performs its responsibilities accordingly.
"The office of the official leader of the Opposition is not something new, it's just changing the name of the current Minority leader in the National Assembly to be the official leader of the Opposition," he said.
He said the Opposition has bigger roles in the government in terms of fighting corruption and strengthening the parliamentary watchdog committee.
Barasa called out those trying to imply that the creation of the office will embezzle funds that could help address other issues affecting the country.
He said the move to create the office will increase government productivity since they will have someone calling them out in case they fail in their responsibilities.
Barasa said the current office of the Minority leader in the National Assembly cannot perform similar roles as what the official office of the opposition leader would since it may lack the right vocal weight.
"Even if the leader of the Minority party in the National Assembly comes out today and says he has seen something wrong with the government it will just be seen as normal political noise," the MP said.
He said a stronger opposition would only be effective with the office of the opposition leader who will put everyone in government in check.
