The office of the government spokesperson has been moved from the Ministry of Ministry of Information, Communication and the Digital Economy to the office of the President.
The change is in line with the latest executive review by President William Ruto under Executive Order Number 2 of 2023.
In a statement, Ruto said the review and re-organization of government is necessary to embed operational enhancements and functional changes to make Ministries, State Departments, State Agencies and Kenya’s Foreign Service optimize performance.
"Now therefore, I William Samoie Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Statute Laws of Kenya, hereby order and direct that the Government of Kenya shall be organized as set out in this Executive Order," he said.
In October, Ruto appointed former nominated MP Isaac Mwaura as the government spokesman.
Mwaura is deputised by Mwanaisha Chidzunga and Gabriel Muthuma.
He said former news anchor and MP aspirant will deal with all things related to mainstream media.
Mwaura said Gabriel Muthuma will handle matters related to new media.
Mwaura took over from the former government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna, who currently works as Chief of Staff in Siaya County.
In a recent interview with the Star, Mwaura said his new role will give him a platform to speak to the nation and to help the government showcase what it's doing.
"It is actually to tell the story of the Kenya Kwanza administration, explain the government’s function, and generate news from within the government," he said.
"I see the key role of the office of the govt spokesman being the coordination of the messaging of government, towards greater transparency and accountability.
He added:
"We want to bridge the divide between the government and the media because it hasn’t been very good. It is a very challenging and engaging job and I'm cut out for it."
