Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has said the reinstatement of the Nuno-Modogashe road is taking shape and the diversion road is set to be ready for use.

In a statement on Sunday afternoon, the authority said Maalmin-Garissa Tog Dub will be opened by Monday.

"KeNHA projects that the temporary passage, Maalmin - Garissa Tog Dub, will be opened by tomorrow, November 13, 2023, if the rains do not disrupt the works at Maalmin," it said.

This is expected to pave the way for the major works along Modika-Nuno-Modogashe Road.

The road was damaged and cut off by the ongoing heavy rains and recurrent floods in the area.

KeNHA has urged road users to be cautious and patient as the work gets done, for their safety.

Construction works on the road began on Saturday shortly after the section was cut off and, motorists and travellers were trapped.

An earlier statement by the authority said some 20 metres of the road was swept away to pave the way for crossing water.

At another part, some 25km at Jilango, 80 meters of the road was swept away to create a river with water being overtopped to a further 200 metres of the road.

This resulted in "extensively damaging the pavement and a shoulder erosion of nearly 100 metres".

Damages were also recorded 40 km at Tog Dub where 300 meters of the road was overtopped by water, 100 meters were cut off, and a further 200 meters were compromised with extensive damage to the surfacing layer and road embankments.

KeNHA further stated that 45 km at Maalmin, 900 meters of the road was also overtopped and washed out.
