Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, President William Ruto, UDA chairperson Cecily Mbarire and UDA secretary general Cleophas Malala during the launch of the UDA offices in Nyeri county on September 9, 2023.

Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga has insisted that the next UDA Secretary General should come from Mt Kenya.

The Senator said that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua would support Kiharu Mp Ndindi Nyoro for the SG position.

"Ndindi is a young leader and can lead and the DP would support him. In our meeting we said that the SG must come from Mt Kenya," Wamatinga said.

Wamatinga said that it is on record even before the Kenya Kwanza regime came into power that both President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua would nurture upcoming leaders.

He said that even at Parliament, the committees which appear to be complex were given to young leaders.

"They vowed because they know when they leave office, they want to hand over to young people who are capable of steering this country properly," the Senator said.

In September, President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance party unveiled what its leadership calls a foolproof system that will see members vote electronically in the upcoming party elections.

The party's National Governing Council meeting held on September 29, ruled that the outfit resolved that the elections shall be conducted on December 9, 2023.

This would be the party's first-ever elections since its inception in 2021, yet the most consequential one as President Ruto lays the ground for his 2027 reelection bid.

Ahead of the UDA party elections, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale last month filed a petition at the party's Dispute Resolutions Committee seeking the removal of Secretary General Cleophas Malala.

In the petition, Khalwale and another UDA member, Walter Mkinginyi Trenk, accused Malala of usurping the authority and duties of the party’s National Elections Board.

The petitioners decried the respondent’s move to appoint county and regional administrators to oversee upcoming local elections set for December 9.

“The Respondent overstepped his mandate and usurped the roles and mandate of the National Elections Board. The Petitioners will suffer irreparable personal loss and prejudice if the Honorable Committee does not intervene,” the two contended.
