The Opposition will support the report of the National Dialogue Committee if certain aspects will be subjected to a referendum, Azimio leader Raila Odinga has said.

In a statement, Raila said the creation of the Office of Leader of the Opposition and embedment of the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary must be decided by the people.

Raila insisted that the people of Kenya must have their say regarding the establishment of two offices by way of a referendum.

“Besides it is a constitutional requirement that such significant restructuring of government must go through a referendum to avoid the mischief that may be played by some people going to court,” he added.

He further added that Kenyans must agree on whether they want a parliamentary, presidential system or a hybrid system of governance.

“It is also our stand that this country cannot continue moving forward by being undecided. We have to agree whether we want a parliamentary, presidential system or hybrid,” he said.

Raila noted that Kenya Kwanza had insisted that the only issues it was ready to discuss were; the reconstitution of the IEBC, implementation of the Two-Thirds Gender Rule, entrenchment of Constituency Development Fund, establishment and the entrenchment of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition and embedment of the Office of Prime Cabinet Secretary.

Azimio named the cost of living, audit of the 2022 presidential election results, restructuring and reconstitution of the IEBC.

It also wanted interference with political parties discussed.

The committee was mandated to recommend appropriate legal and policy reforms on issues affecting Kenyans in line with the Constitution and respecting the functional and institutional integrity of state organs.
