Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has confirmed the appointment of Rose Mkalama as the Chief Executive Officer of Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC).

Mkalama has been acting as the CEO for the last three months at the corporation.

In a statement to the media, Chirchir said Mkalama has a rich experience in public service spanning 30 years and has held various senior positions in different capacities.

“She was first employed as the Secretary and Head of the Legal Department in the then Rural Electrification Authority, the predecessor to REREC, a position she held for 10 years and later appointed as General Manager of Corporate Services,” Chirchir said.

He noted that on enactment of the Energy Act 2019, that REREC an expanded mandate, Mkalama was appointed to the position of General Manager, Energy Centres.

He said Mkalama was charged with the responsibility of spearheading the transition of Energy Centres from the Ministry of Energy to REREC.

Mkalama was appointed to the position of General Manager of Information, Education and Communication in 2021, a position she held until she was appointed the Acting CEO.

Mkalama is a Certified Utility Management Specialist from the Institute of Public-Private Partnerships and the Water Engineering and Development Centre of Loughborough University, Washington DC.

She holds a PhD degree in Strategic Management, a Master of Business Administration degree in human resource management from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Law in oil and gas from Strathmore University and a Bachelor’s Degree in law from the University of Nairobi and a Certified Public Secretary (ICPS K) from the Institute of Certified Secretaries of Kenya.
