The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has appealed to the public for information that will aid in the re-arrest of Collins Jumaisi, a murder suspect who escaped from Gigiri Police Station in August.
The DCI in a public appeal on Monday said the suspect who was set to be charged with murder escaped from police custody on August 20, 2024.
In a bid to expedite the search for the suspect, the DCI has announced a significant cash reward for anyone who provides credible information leading to his capture.
The DCI did not however state the exact figure to be given to anyone who will volunteer information.
“A significant cash reward will be provided to anyone with credible information leading to the suspect's arrest,” the DCI said in the appeal.
"Information on the suspect's whereabouts can be reported confidentially through the anonymous Fichua kwa DCI hotline at 0800722203 or police hotlines 999, 911, and 112," DCI said.
Alternatively, those with any vital information on the whereabouts of the suspect can report to any police station across the country.
According to the police report, the suspect hails from Shiru Sublocation, Shaviringa Location, in Hamisi Subcounty, Vihiga County.
He was scheduled to be charged with murder allegations before his escape.
The DCI has characterised the situation as a pressing matter, emphasising the need for public cooperation in ensuring that Jumaisi is re-arrested.
"Your support could greatly impact the re-arrest of this wanted suspect. Every piece of information is valuable. Every piece of information is valuable,” the DCI stated.
The DCI assured the public that all information provided will be made anonymously, allowing citizens to assist without fear.
Jumaisi was among 13 suspects who escaped from the police station on the fateful day.
Jumaisi was a top and high-value suspect and had been remanded at Gigiri Police Station pending plea taking.
He is said to have admitted to having killed up to 42 women. He denied the charges.
Police came to know of the escape as they woke up the suspects in custody for morning tea.
They had cut a wire mesh that forms part of security to the cells and scaled a perimeter wall escaping.
Director of DCI Mohamed Amin confirmed the incident saying a fresh hunt had been launched on the suspect.
“It is unfortunate this has happened but we are pursuing the matter for action,” he said.
