Ruto to bishops: Concerns you raised on SHIF will be fixed

Ruto said all mistakes will be corrected because Universal Health Coverage is a must.

President William Ruto has assured Catholic bishops that he will address the concerns they raised concerning the new Social Health Insurance Fund.

Ruto acknowledged that the clerics expressed concerns about the new health insurance but assured that he will have the concrns addressed. 

“The other day I got greetings from the council of bishops in form of a letter so before tomorrow I will look for a Catholic church to attend so that my week can be complete, as the church has directed the today,” he started off.

He was speaking on Saturday during the installation of Bishop Peter Kimani as the new bishop of Embu Diocese,Ruto sought to reassure the clerics that he heard them loud and clear and his administration would address the concerns on SHIF.

The President said the Social Health Insurance Fund is aimed at ensuring universal health coverage is attained for the good of all Kenyans and a few hiccups won't stall the progress.

“I want to assure the bishops, like they have corrected us that there are a few mistakes, we shall correct those mistakes because Universal Health Coverage is a must do because it will make a difference and ensure no cirtizen is left behind,” he said.

The President emphasised that the government was committed to working with the Church to promote national unity, peace and development.

Ruto also spoke about the importance of religious institutions in shaping the moral compass of the nation, asserting that the church played a vital role in guiding the youth and providing ethical leadership.

He recognised the challenges that the church faces in this respect, given the rapid social and economic changes in the country, but assured the bishops that the government would continue to support the church’s mission of spreading peace, unity, and love.

Bishop Peter Kimani's installation as the head of the Diocese of Embu marked a new chapter for the Catholic Church in the region.

The ceremony, held at the University of Embu grounds, was attended by numerous clergy, politicians and local dignitaries, making it a significant occasion in the religious and political spheres of the country.

The event attracted a significant number of political leaders, religious leaders and government officials as well as members of the public.

Among them was Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua.

The ceremony, a significant religious milestone, was also celebrated in the presence of high-ranking church officials, including the Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya, Archbishop Hubertus Matheus van Megen, and a host of local bishops.
