  • President William Ruto last week appointed Kidero chairperson of the Kenya National Trading Corporation (KNTC).

Former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero has assumed his new role of chairperson of the Kenya National Trading Corporation (KNTC).

Kidero was received by the Principal Secretary for Trade Alfred Kombundo, who formally introduced him to the KNTC board at the institution’s headquarters.

Kidero proceeded to chair a scheduled inaugural meeting of the Board of Directors meeting, marking a significant moment in the governance of the state-owned enterprise.

The Monday meeting was crucial for setting the tone and direction of the corporation’s leadership, laying the groundwork for governance structures and operational excellence.

The discussions were centred on critical areas such as strategic planning, financial management, and stakeholder collaboration, which are essential for the organization's long-term sustainability and growth.

“These agenda items are designed to ensure that the corporation not only fulfils its mandate but also adheres to the principles of accountability, transparency, and efficiency in serving national interests,” a statement from KNTC said.

It said the session was particularly important for KNTC, as it seeks to strengthen its role in stabilising commodity prices, supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and enhancing Kenya’s trade competitiveness.

“The establishment of sound governance practices during this meeting will help drive KNTC's mission to promote fair trade, improve market access, and ensure the availability of essential goods across the country,” the statement added.

President William Ruto appointed Kidero to the position last week. In a gazette notice dated November 15, Ruto designated Kidero to serve in his new for a period of three years, effective immediately.

The former Nairobi governor now takes over from Hussein Tene Debasso whose appointment was revoked.

Kidero makes a comeback in Ruto’s government after a recent nomination as a Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) in the Ministry of Trade failed to sail through.

Kidero contested for the Homa Bay County governor seat during the 2022 general elections and lost to Gladys Wanga of the Orange Democratic Movement.
