Two people have died in a tragic road accident in Mlolongo, Machakos County.

The duo, a bodaboda rider and his pillion passenger, a woman, died on the spot after the motorcycle they were riding on was knocked down by a truck along the old Mombasa road in Mlolongo town on Monday.

The incident that happened at around 6.00 am was confirmed by Athi River East subcounty police commander Anderson Mbae.

The matter was reported to the Mlolongo police station as a fatal road accident incident report shortly after it occurred.

“It was reported by a local administrator that the accident which involved a bodaboda rider and a truck had occurred at Oilcom near the yellow flyover. The rider and his pillion passenger died on the spot,” a source told the Star.

Eyewitnesses said the rider was ferrying the woman from Mlolongo market when the incident occurred.

The truck's driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the accident.

The empty truck was headed to the nearby quarries to collect construction materials when the incident occurred.

Irate members of the public held demonstrations over the incident and the duo’s demise blaming it on the driver.

They blocked the road using tyres and stones in protest before torching the motor vehicle.

Officers from the Mlolongo police station rushed to the scene, dispersed the demonstrators, cleared the scene and processed it.

The bodies were removed to the mortuary while the wreckage of both the torched motor vehicle and the motorcycle was taken to the Mlolongo police station.

The incident led to heavy traffic snarl up along the road with motorists diverting to alternative routes in the area. Police have launched investigations into the incident.
