MPs to vet EACC CEO nominee Abdi Mohamud

He emerged successful from a list of 14 candidates who had been shortlisted.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Deputy CEO Abdi Mohamud who has been nominated to be the agency’s new CEO will Tuesday appear before MPs for vetting.

Mohamud is scheduled to appear before the National Assembly’s Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs, chaired by Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkonga.

If approved, he will succeed the current CEO Twalib Mbarak whose six-year term ends in January.

The nomination of Mohamud was announced by EACC Chairperson David Oginde in a notification dated November 22, 2024.

"The Commission wishes to inform the public that following a competitive recruitment process, Mr Abdi Ahmed Mohamud, MBS has been considered as the nominee for the position of Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission," Oginde said.

He emerged successful from a list of 14 candidates who had been shortlisted.

A total of 172 had applied for the position by close of application on October 7, 2024.

The list of shortlisted candidates was published in the print media on October 11, 2024.

They include Stephen Maisha Ngowa (Kitui), Doreen Nkatha Muthaura (Isiolo), Jackson Kaunda Mue (Machakos), Joseph Vincent Onyango (Nairobi) and Paul Ndemo Maina (Kisii).

Others were  Victor Omari Okongo (Siaya), Peter Lokol Lomulen (Turkana), Obadiah Kipkoech Keitany (Baringo), John Tentemo Ole Moyaki (Kajiado) and David Kiplagat Ruto Too (Uasin Gishu).

Justa Wawira Mwangi (Embu), Mohamed Abdul Mmaka (Lamu) and Waweru Karanja (Laikipia) were also on the list.

The interviews for the shortlisted candidates were conducted from 19 to 21 November 2024.

Before rising to his current role, Mohamud served as Director of investigation at the commission.

He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a seasoned investigator with a wealth of experience spanning over 30 years in the investigation of corruption and other forms of economic crimes.

He started his law enforcement career in 1989 as a Cadet Inspector at the Kenya Police Service.

He later joined the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC) in 2005 (now, EACC) as a Senior Officer in charge of the Rapid Response Division and rose through the ranks to head the Directorate of Investigation.

Abdi has undergone expansive training over the years as a career detective in corruption and economic crimes both locally and internationally with various distinguished law enforcement agencies.

He holds a Master of Science Degree in Security and Risk Management from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom, a Bachelor of Laws Degree from Mt. Kenya University and a Professional Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
