Anti-riot police were deployed outside the Directorate of Criminal Investigations ahead of the arrival of Kiambu Senator Karung'o Thangwa for grilling in relation to Limuru funeral chaos.

Also expected at the offices for grilling is former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi.

More police were deployed outside the Mazingira Building in anticipation of possible chaos, police said.

Water cannons were also deployed there.

Thangwa and a group of leaders allied to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua are under probe over the chaos.

Thangwa appeared before detectives in Nyeri on Wednesday but was asked to report to Nairobi on Thursday.

This prompted the heavy deployment after a crowd appeared in Nyeri to meet the senator and started to chant anti-government songs.

Thangwa who was accompanied by a group of leaders termed the summons as intimidation by the government

Mwathi confirmed he had been summoned by DCI.

Police announced last Friday that investigations into an incident where goons invaded a funeral event in Limuru and destroyed property are ongoing.

So far, a number of leaders who were present have been summoned for grilling as part of the probe into the Thursday, November 28 afternoon incident.

Gachagua escaped unharmed from the event.

Several mourners were injured in the drama.

Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohamed Amin said they are investigating the incident.

Gachagua, who on Thursday accused the state of sponsoring violence against him with the intention of killing him, was attending the burial of Erastus Nduati, 23, at Bibirioni village in Kiambu County's Limuru constituency.

“The incident in Limuru is being investigated and appropriate action will be taken against both the perpetrators and instigators," said Amin.

Amin also advised all interested parties to desist from making allegations that are not officially made at police stations.

"If you claim to have been abducted, please report the matter to a police station so that we can assign investigators. If you saw the assailants or have any other vital information that can help us catch the criminals, let us know in confidence. We remain an impartial institution committed to the rule of law," he said.

Police spokesperson Dr Resila Onyango denied police had arrested the former Limuru Member of Parliament, Peter Mungai Mwathi.

She added the incident happened when Mwathi was addressing mourners at Bibirioni Boys High School, Limuru, when unknown individuals started hurling objects and chairs, forcing mourners to scamper for safety.

“Consequently, property of unknown number and value were damaged, but so far, we have received a report from only one complainant.”

“Further, we wish to clarify that the National Police Service did not arrest Peter Mwathi, and he is not a person of interest to the Police,” she said.

She said DCI Limuru has commenced investigations into the matter to establish the cause of the fracas and bring to book, the perpetrators behind this insensitive act.

The officers are currently on the ground recording statements from family members of the deceased.

“We call upon anybody with information that may aid in the arrest of the suspects that invaded the burial to report to the nearest police station, even as we reaffirm our commitment to serve and protect all Kenyans,” said Onyango.

Police said they are investigating Thang’wa and other leaders over the chaos.

They are investigating claims of malicious damage to property and injury to persons.

The incident happened on November 28 at the Bibirioni Boys High School playground.

Thang’wa is among a section of leaders allied to Gachagua who had on Thursday evening visited the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road in a bid to demand a quick probe into the chaos that were witnessed earlier in the day during the burial in Limuru.

They said the chaos witnessed at a burial event seemed well planned.

Thang’wa and his Nyandarua counterpart John Methu said the chaos was a direct attempt on the life of the former DP.

Gachagua insinuated that the State had intentionally withdrawn his security detail to facilitate such an attack.

"Earlier this week the government withdrew the final aspects of my security that was in place after the impeachment process we are contesting. We did not raise an issue with this decision although expectations were that any Kenyan who has served at the level of government that I was privileged to serve at, would be secured by the government even after leaving office," he said.

"However it now looks like the decision to withdraw my security was to leave me exposed to the kind of attack we have witnessed today."

Gachagua recounted the incident at the funeral of a young man named Erastus Nduati, noting that goons specifically targeted him and descended on mourners with all manner of crude weapons, indiscriminately attacking both women and children.
