The universities met the requirements to be considered in the globally recognised Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa ranking.

Mount Kenya University (MKU) celebrated its 26th graduation ceremony on Friday, December 6, 2024, under the theme "Internationalization of University Education Towards Development of a Competitive Global Workforce."
The event was marked by inspirational speeches, acknowledgment of academic excellence, and a reaffirmation of the university's role in shaping globally competitive professionals.
Presiding over the event, Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi, the Vice-Chancellor, highlighted MKU's record-breaking enrollment of 60,721 students in the September-December 2024 semester, attributing the growth to the institution's dynamic curriculum.
"We have revamped our programs to address emerging trends and market demands, enabling us to graduate 7,448 students, including 12 PhDs and 617 Master's degree holders," he said.
The chief guest at the graduation ceremony, Uganda’s Deputy High Commissioner to Kenya, Amb. Eunice Kigenyi noted that MKU has been able to adapt to global changes, particularly the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
She acknowledged partnerships with German and Austrian institutions that have secured international healthcare opportunities for MKU graduates.

The graduation was held days after MKU was ranked number three out of 15 Kenyan universities that met the requirements to be considered in the globally recognised Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa ranking. It featured 129 universities from 22 countries in the region.
Regionally, the university was ranked number 32 out of 129 Sub-Saharan Africa Universities stamping its recognition as a top academic destination.
Dr. Vincent Gaitho, Chairman of the University Council, emphasized MKU's role as a regional leader in global integration.
"We have established partnerships that enhance teaching and learning, including collaborations with Kenyatta University Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital, and Nanjing Zhongxing Xinyanda Information Technology Co. Ltd. These partnerships are critical in fostering a workforce that thrives in the global economy," he noted.
In his keynote address, Prof. John Struthers, MKU's Chancellor, elaborated on the institution's growth strategy, citing international consortia as a key driver.
"Our initiatives like the Africa Center for Career Enhancement and Skills Support (ACCESS), Students Training for Entrepreneurial Promotion on Sustainability (STEP-S), and the International Interdisciplinary Consortium-Africa exemplify our commitment to creating a skilled global workforce," he said.

Dr. Jane Nyutu, MKU Co-founder, underscored the university's expanding footprint in Uganda and beyond.
"We have trained and employed many Ugandan students and professionals, and our new office block in Kibuli, Kampala, will further enhance access to quality education in South Sudan, Burundi, and the DRC," she said.
She also recognised the invaluable contributions of faculty and staff in realizing MKU's vision.

The graduating class received words of encouragement from former MKU students who have now risen to key positions in the business world.
"MKU taught me to push boundaries, think globally, and act purposefully. The degree you earn today is not just a document—it is a passport to explore, grow, and evolve in ways you never imagined," said Ms. Irene Nyagah, MKU alumni and Managing Director of Hallmark Institute of Professionals.

“There is no greater asset in life than education—today, you have it all. You are on the path to becoming the person you've always dreamed of. You've already made significant strides toward turning your aspirations into reality. Now, it is time to continue forging your path with determination and confidence,” said Vas.
“Do not fear making mistakes. What truly matters in life is the effort you put forth. When you stumble, rise, smile, and learn from the experience. Every step, even the missteps, will bring you closer to the life you envision. You are already a winner. Never stop. Never accept "no" from others. With persistence and a willingness to try, doors will open.”
