More than 300 people have been displaced after a fire razed their houses at Langas Estate in Eldoret. The temporary mud and iron sheet houses were completely destroyed in the fire, with nothing rescued from the houses.

None was seriously injured, as residents managed to rescue children who were in some of the houses. The affected families were living in the houses at Kisumu Ndogo, which is a heavily populated slum area.

Gaitano Museveni, who is a village elder, and one of those affected said they heard a loud explosion leading to a huge fire that ran through the houses.

“We could not rescue any property from the houses, but luckily no one was injured in the fire," Museveni said.

The village elder said he lost all his household property in the fire incident.

The residents are blaming the Uasin Gishu County Fire Department for failing to respond to the incident, forcing them to use their own means in attempts to put out the inferno.

“This fire has taken more than one hour, and there was no response from the fire dependent even after we called them many times," said another resident, Paul Ouma.

Residents used basins and buckets to ferry water from nearby water sources, but they were unable to put out the fire.

Workers from the Kenya Power Company went to the area and disconnected electricity from the area to avert further damage. Two electricity posts were burned in the fire incident.

Residents blamed the county, alleging that it has ignored their plight.

“We wonder why they claim that Eldoret is now a city yet they have no capacity to respond to such fire incidents," said a victim.

Uasin Gishu county police boss Benjamin Mwanthi said they would investigate the cause of the fire incident.

A team of police officers had also visited the area to inspect and establish the cause of the fire.
