Moi University has pledged to pay its dons and other workers all their delayed salaries in a bid to end a fresh strike which started last week.

UASU officials led by branch chairman Richard Okedi, secretary  Busolo Wegesa and branch secretary of the Kenya Universities Staff Union Mary Chepkwemoi confirmed that they were in talks with the university management to end the strike.

“The university has engaged us and pledged to pay salaries by the end of today”, said Wegesa.

Wegesa said they would only resume work once the salaries and arrears they are owed are paid by the university management.

The union officials said they also want the management to address all issues as agreed in the national return to work formula signed late last year.

The workers have formed a joint committee with the management to follow up and ensure the details of the return to work deal are implemented.

The unions had last week called on the workers to resume the strike which had been suspended last year after a return to work deal was signed in Nairobi.

The UASU and KUSU officials regretted that the frequent strikes were ruining the lives of over 30,000 students who miss lessons even after paying fees.

Dr Okero regretted that some students especially those taking medicine had taken over 9 years to complete courses that should take not more than 6 years.

On January 10, Moi University dons and other workers announced the immediate resumption of their strike, claiming the details in the return to work formula signed last year had not been implemented.

The return-to-work deal had been signed between vice chancellors and the unions after agreeing on a national CBA, which was to provide for enhanced salaries for all workers.

That came just hours after President William Ruto addressed a rally at Kesses near the university, pledging to ensure the university resumes normal operations.
