Two killed in miraa van accident on Kitui-Kibwezi Road

The victims were identified as a bodaboda rider and a pedestrian walking along the road.

Two people tragically lost their lives on Saturday morning in an accident involving a miraa-laden pick-up van at Kwa Toma area along the Kitui-Kibwezi road.

According to Kyambati King'ondu, the senior chief for Kyatune in Ikanga Division, Kitui South Subcounty, he was alerted about the incident at 7 am.

"I rushed to the scene and found that a miraa pick-up had knocked down two people, who died on the spot," Chief King'ondu stated.

The victims were identified as a bodaboda rider and a pedestrian walking along the road.

The accident reportedly occurred when the speeding pick-up collided with the rider, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and hit the pedestrian on the sidewalk.

The vehicle came to a halt several meters into the bush after spilling part of its miraa cargo.

Traffic police arrived later to examine the scene and transported the bodies to the morgue.

Chief King'ondu urged road users, including both motorists and pedestrians, to exercise caution to reduce the increasing number of accidents along the road.

"People walking or conducting business near roads should remain vigilant and alert, as vehicles can lose control unexpectedly," he advised.

Minutes later, two people died in a grisly road accident along the Machakos - Kitui road in Kaseve, Machakos county.

Machakos County police commander Patrick Lobolia said the duo included the driver of a Probox motor vehicle and his passenger.

Lobolia said 14 others, passengers of a 14-seater passenger matatu, sustained injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level 5 hospital for medication.

The incident happened on Friday evening and was reported to Machakos police station as a fatal traffic accident incident report.

"Two people died on the spot after two motor vehicles, a probox and 14 - seater - passenger matatu got involved in a head-on collision along the Machakos - Kitui road at Kaseve area within Machakos subcounty on Friday," Lobolia said.

He spoke to the Star by phone shortly after the incident occurred.
