Nairobi City County Assembly Health Committee chairperson Maurice Ochieng has called on the County Government of Nairobi to move quickly and ensure that all buildings are repainted.

Ochieng’ said the county should start enforcement with buildings located in Nairobi Central Business District.

According to him, most of the buildings are dirty and un-presentable hence violating section 118b of Public Health Act Cap 242.

"Most of the buildings have become an eyesore in regards to their conditions. They are dirty and un-presentable hence quick intervention is needed to first address the issue of painting,” he said.

He added that the County Executive Committee for Health Madam Silantoi should act promptly and ensure buildings are repainted.

"The law on public nuisances under Section 118b of Public Health Act Cap 242 is clear and compliance is therefore a must. We want to caution the building owners against ignoring these provisions on public health,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Ochieng’ applauded Governor Johnson Sakaja's effort to reinstate order in the Nairobi CBD.

"We are happy with what the Governor is doing and of course as lawmakers, we shall also revisit legislation to reinforce the same. Streets are now clean and orderly,” he explained.

The County Government has warned hawkers against leaving behind their wares in the streets, but a section of hawkers has defied this directive.

Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria Omatoke warned that Sakaja administration will not entertain any wares being left behind on streets by hawkers at night and that they will be disposed thereof.

"Pursuant to the Provisions of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and the Nairobi City County Public Nuisance Act 2021, it has come to the attention of the Nairobi City County Government that many hawkers leave their wares and belongings in the streets and lanes, obstruction cleaning activities,” said Mosiria.
