Cape Media Limited has expressed interest in establishing collaborations with the Kenya Editors Guild.

The development came during a meeting between the Cape Media CEO Mwenda Njoka and the leadership of the Kenya Editors Guild at the Cape Media offices.

Cape Media is the company that owns Radio47 and TV47, some of the fastest-growing media brands in Kenya.

Editors Guild President Zubeida Kananu and CEO Rozalia Omugo led the delegation.

Other Cape Media leaders present included Head of TV Macharia Wamugo, Head of Radio Geoffrey Mung'ou, Head of Strategy Macharia Gachuru, Head of Corporate Affairs Jared Ouma, and several members of the editorial team.

During the meeting, the Cape Media CEO expressed optimism in a fruitful collaboration between the two entities, aimed at upholding the highest standards of editorial integrity.

At the same time, the Editors Guild president emphasised the need for training for journalists, especially on matters of defamation.

Kananu explained that most media houses were battling defamation cases in court, as she urged editors to enhance fact-checking to minimise the cases.

“We have a partnership with the Law Society of Kenya, which has played a big role in handling some defamation cases but as journalists, we need to be always responsible in our reporting,” she said.

The Kenya Editors’ Guild is the professional association for editors in Kenya, including senior print, broadcast and online editors, and scholars of journalism and media studies.

The association and its members commit themselves to defend and promote media freedom and editorial independence; promote quality and ethical journalism; and provide a forum for sharing ideas and experiences that are critical in and for the media.

Membership is open to people holding senior editorial positions, people holding senior academic positions related to journalism and media studies, and people who have served the Guild or have in the past served in senior editorial positions in media.

Being a member of the Kenya Editors Guild opens up doors for networking, training, sharing expertise with other members and contributing to improving journalism in Kenya through promotion of professionalism.
