The government has moved to quell a financial crisis in schools across the country over the delay in the disbursement of capitation by releasing Sh14 billion.
This is in addition to the Sh19 billion released last Thursday.
In a statement through the office of the Government Spokesperson, KCB account holders are set to access the funds from today (Thursday) with the rest on Friday.
“The National Treasury on Wednesday released Sh14 billion more towards the School Capitation and will be disbursed by today to school accounts,” it states.
“So far Sh33 billion has now been released to Primary, Junior School (JSS) and Secondary School.”
The government also assured head teachers and principals that the balance of Sh15 billion is still outstanding for this term and will be released in due course.
The funds, meant for tuition and operational expenses, have been a source of concern for school heads.
It has occasioned serious operational challenges in various schools.
Last week, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba appealed to school heads not to send learners home over fees arrears saying the government has disbursed part of the Sh48 billion capitation.
He admitted that the release of the funds has been faced with challenges but that has since been resolved.
"So we are in the process of completing that Sh48 billion in the next one or two weeks to ensure that all our schools have got their resources so we are asking headteachers not to send children home because the funds are on the way to their accounts," Ogamba said.
He spoke in Mombasa at St Charles Lwanga Junior School during the enlisting of learners into the Social Health Authority (SHA).
The Kenya Primary Heads Association had a fortnight ago expressed fear that schools may be unable to continue keeping learners in institutions if capitation is delayed any further.
