Man shot dead while transporting sandalwood in Samburu

Police also recovered a damaged mobile phone next to the body

Mystery surrounds an incident where a 26-year-old man was found dead with a bullet wound in the Wamba area of Samburu County.

Police said Ibrahim Kimengech was transporting sandalwood when he was shot and killed on February 5 morning. His body was found lying on the roadside in the Oromodei area.

Police said the deceased was attacked by unknown assailants who shot him from the back. The assailant did not steal anything from the deceased.

A spent cartridge and a live bullet were found at the scene. Police also recovered a damaged mobile phone next to the body. Pieces of sandalwood were also found at the scene.

It is not clear who was behind the shooting, police said. The body was moved to a local mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.

Sandalwood has been classified as an endangered species as part of efforts to stop its harvest and sale.

Residents suspect he was killed by special agents tasked with containing the menace of harvesting and selling of the product.

Police said they are investigating the incident, and so far no arrest has been made.

Meanwhile, a three-year-old boy died out of a dog bite in Siaya Town. The boy was taken to Siaya Medical Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries.

Police said the boy had visible marks on the right hand at the elbow. The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy.

The owner of the dog and the animal were being trailed for action. Officials suspect the dog is infected with rabies.

In Mikindani, Mombasa, a body was found in the Indian Ocean’s Kwa Punda area. The body was floating on the shores of the ocean when it was sighted by fishermen in the area.

Police said the unknown male adult with no clothes on was completely decomposed.

Police with assistance from members of the public retrieved the body suspected to have drowned and took it to Coast General Hospital Mortuary for preservation awaiting identification and an autopsy.

In Migori Town, a body was spotted at the Migori River within Nyangubo village and later retrieved.

Police said the body of an unknown male adult was floating in the river and had no visible injuries. The body was taken to Migori County referral hospital awaiting autopsy and identification.
