The 2025 KCSE candidates who applied for admission to universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions will know where they have been placed when the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) releases the 2026/27 placement results today.
The exercise will bring to an end months of anxious waiting for thousands of candidates who sat the examination and hope to advance their studies beyond Form Four.
Out of the 993,226 candidates who sat the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination, 270,715 candidates, representing 27.18 per cent of the total candidature, attained the minimum university entry grade of C+ and above and were eligible to apply for degree courses.
The remaining 722,511 candidates were eligible to apply for artisan courses, teacher training, or diploma and certificate programmes in TVET institutions.
The placement results will be released at the Edge Convention Centre, College of Insurance, South C, Nairobi, from 1 pm.
Soon after the release of the results, candidates will be required to log into the KUCCPS student portal to check their placement and download their admission letters.
The admission letter is a critical document required when applying for government scholarships and student loans.
Candidates who are not satisfied with the institutions or courses to which they have been placed will have an opportunity to appeal for a placement revision.
The placement exercise is conducted purely on merit and guided by three key factors.
The first consideration is the grade a candidate attained in the KCSE examination.
This is then assessed against the course choices the candidate selected during the application process.
If a candidate's cluster points fall below the cut-off for their preferred course, or the programme fills up with higher-scoring applicants, KUCCPS skips that choice and automatically considers the next preferred course.
If a candidate does not qualify for any of their priority courses, they will be given an opportunity to apply during the subsequent revision window for courses with lower cut-off points where vacancies still exist.
If they remain unplaced after the first revision, they will get a second opportunity during the second revision to select less competitive courses.
If they still fail to secure a course, KUCCPS will automatically place them in any available programme for which they meet the minimum entry requirements.
The third factor KUCCPS considers is institutional capacity.
The placement service uses an automated system to allocate students to universities and colleges by matching applicants' merit and course choices with the available capacity.
If an institution's approved capacity for a particular programme is, for example, 1,000 students, KUCCPS stops allocating students to that programme once the limit is reached.
Prior to the placement exercise, universities and colleges declare the maximum number of students they can admit to each academic programme.
KUCCPS uses these figures to cap admissions, ensuring enrolment does not exceed the institutions' available resources.
The good news for this year's applicants is that there are more vacancies than eligible candidates across the 43 public universities, 31 private universities and TVET institutions.
Universities declared 322,396 available degree slots approved by the Commission for University Education against 270,715 candidates eligible for degree programmes.
TVET institutions offering diploma, certificate and artisan courses declared a total capacity of 1,132,531 trainees, while secondary Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) declared a combined capacity of 2,480.
What to do after placement results are released
- Visit the official website of the university or college you have been placed in to download your admission letter and joining instructions. Universities typically upload these a few days after the placement release.
- Immediately apply for government scholarships and loans through the Higher Education Financing (HEF) Portal. The portal is managed by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
- If you are unsatisfied with your assigned course or institution, apply for a course transfer through the KUCCPS Student Portal during the specified transfer window. This process opens shortly after the initial results are published.
- Gather all necessary admission documents as outlined in your institution's joining instructions. This typically includes your KCSE certificate, National ID (or waiting card), birth certificate, passport photos, and completed HELB/HEF application forms.
Students who secure placement are expected to report to their respective institutions from September 2026.
Physically or virtually report to your university or college on the designated start date to complete the registration process.
