A major crisis is anticipated at health facilities in Nairobi City beginning Thursday following a strike notice issued by doctors.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) announced Wednesday that the work boycott will start at midnight.
The doctors are protesting over illegal salary stoppages, dismissals, and frequent salary delays.
They are also calling on the county to address the stalled promotions, unpaid gratuities, and delayed confirmation letters.
“Doctors don’t choose to strike, but how can we care for patients when we are deliberately incapacitated?” they said during a press briefing.
According to the medics, for quality healthcare, doctors must be valued, supported, and empowered to serve.
Health officials from the county were yet to issue a statement regarding the planned strike.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki oversaw the signing of an agreement between doctors and the Ministry of Health on December 19, 2024, thwarting a nationwide strike that was initially set for December 22, 2024.
The agreement, which was also signed by the Council of Governors (CoG), was set to see intern doctors paid a salary of Sh206,000 in accordance with the 2017 CBA signed between the government and KMPDU.
