President William Ruto has extended a special message of goodwill to Muslims across the country as they prepare to mark the holy month of Ramadan.

In a recorded clip, Ruto reminded the Muslims that this was an important time for spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and devotion to acts of charity.

“This is an opportunity for you to commit yourselves to strengthening faith, and committing to do that which is right,” he said.

Ruto emphasised the importance of fasting, prayer, and good deeds during this blessed month, noting this was the central role of faith in strengthening communities and promoting unity.

He also praised the Muslim community for their role in the country as he urged them to uphold their spirit of caring and support for the less privileged.

What is it?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered the holiest month for Muslims.

It is considered important because it is to mark when the Quran, the Muslim holy book, was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad.

It is a time of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, refraining from eating, drinking, smoking, and sinful behavior.

It begins and ends with the appearance of the crescent Moon.

The fast is seen as an act of spiritual discipline, self-control, and empathy for the less fortunate.

Ramadan is also a time for increased devotion to worship, with many Muslims engaging in special prayers (like the Taraweeh prayers) and reading the Quran.

The month ends with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a festive occasion where Muslims gather for communal prayers, give charity (Zakat al-Fitr), and enjoy meals together with family and friends.

This year’s Ramadan is expected to begin on February 28 and end on March 30.

The month of Ramadan usually lasts between 29 and 30 days, depending on the cycle of the Moon910
