
A retired commercial pilot was killed after his car collided with a lorry and burst into flames on the Mombasa highway.
Police said Col (rtd) James Gitahi was alone in the saloon car.
He died on the spot after his body was badly burnt in the 5:30pm accident.
Gitahi is a retired pilot but has been flying commercial planes at the Wilson Airport.
Witnesses said he was on his way to Nairobi and was trying to overtake a lorry when he collided with an oncoming one.
As a result of the impact, the car burst into flames, trapping him inside.
Rescuers were unable to save the retired pilot. His family members said they were informed of the accident later on after the number plate of his car was circulated Gitahi’s charred body was moved to a mortuary in Machakos, pending other tests.
The driver whose lorry collided with that of Gitahi suffered a fractured left leg. He was admitted in hospital, police said. The family plans to move the body to the Lee Funeral Home on Thursday.
Police said they are investigating the accident.
