President William Ruto's Affordable Housing Programme has created 244, 232 jobs for Kenyans, Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura has said.

Speaking on Tuesday during weekly media briefing, Mwaura noted that of the total jobs created, 100,000 have been taken by youth from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

Mwaura said a total of Sh4.4 billion has been paid out to Jua Kali artisans involved in the programme across the country.

“There is a group from Kibra that got over Sh750 million, another group in Ruiru got Sh100 million and another one in Thika got the same and counting,” he stated.

Mwaura noted that a total 130,988 housing units are under construction with 127,476 in the procurement stage.

“As a result of the new impetus in housing, there is actually low cost of mortgages, which have reduced by 6.2 per cent,” he revealed.

Mwaura further said monthly premiums that are below Sh10,000 have increased from 30,000 to about one million.

“More and more Kenyans are able to access mortgages. Before the private sector was only able to provide 50,000 mortgages and that's why we are targeting 250,000 housing units a year-50,000 by the private sector and 200,000 by the government.”

Mwaura noted that the government will commission 4,888 housing units by the end of March.

“Every quarter, over 4,000 units will be released to the market,” he affirmed.

The Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) is a priority initiative by the government that targets the delivery of decent and affordable housing to low and middle-income households.

Potential homeowners interested in buying the houses can register on the Boma Yangu housing portal, make savings and select their housing preference.

In 2019, Kenya’s population was 47.5 million, of which 31 per cent were residing in urban areas.

Although most of the country’s population still resides in rural areas, the trend towards urbanisation is projected to continue, with 50 per cent of the country’s population expected to live in urban areas by 2050.

House ownership varies across the different counties, with Nairobi and Mombasa having a high proportion of rented houses as opposed to owner-occupied.
